Alkmaar is renowned as the City of Dutch Cheese. A traditional cheese market is held here on Fridays from 10.00 till 12.30 hours, throughout the season (from the first Friday in April till the first in September inclusive).

Art fairs are regularly organised during the summer months, while a ten-day event known as de Kunsttiendaagse is held here in October.
