About the family Van Eyl

The Amrâth group is a real family concern. The founder, Giovanni van Eijl, already started to invest in real estate in 1978. At first he only invested in shops and small offices, but already soon he extended to restaurants and pubs. In this way he gained experience in the alteration and renovation of monumental buildings.

From shop-premises to hotels
Until 1989 Giovanni van Eijl was marketing director of the well-known Amsterdam advertising agency McCann-Erickson, but after that he decided to concentrate entirely on the exploitation of real estate. A couple of years later he started to buy bigger properties like the Slotania Hotel in Amsterdam and the Gooilandcomplex in Hilversum.

The building of an empire
In 1997 Giovanni van Eyl laid the basis of the Amrâth hotel chain with the purchase of the imposing hotel de l’Empereur in Maastricht. Before that he had already taken over Motel Maarsbergen in Maarsbergen. Because Van Eyl could not find a suitable tenant for the Maatricht hotel, he decided to exploit it himself. The name Amrâth was given to the hotels in 2000. It is the maiden name of Van Eyl’s mother, who is of French origin.

Nowadays Van Eijl and his son Kasper manage the Amrâth Group together. Since 2005 Kasper van Eijl has been general director, but father Giovanni is still on the board.
